🌿 How Long Does It Take to Grow Weed Indoors (Realistic Beginner Timeline)
By Kabloomi
In no way am I an expert — I’m just a grower learning as I go and sharing what I pick up along the way.
🌱 Introduction
When I first started growing, I had no clue how long the whole process actually took.
Some people said two months, others said half a year — and I’ve learned the truth is somewhere in between.
If you’re just getting into indoor growing and wondering “how long does it take to grow weed from seed to smoke?”, here’s a simple breakdown of what I’ve learned so far.
Everyone’s setup and strain is different, but this timeline will give you a solid idea of what to expect from start to finish.
🕒 Stage 1: Germination (3–10 Days)
This is where it all begins — getting that little seed to pop.
What I do:
-
Place seeds between damp paper towels inside a plastic bag or in a humidity dome.
-
Keep it somewhere warm and dark (around 75°F).
-
Once I see a white taproot about ¼ inch long, it’s ready to plant in soil.
What I learned: Don’t mess with the seed too much. It’s super delicate early on.
🌿 Stage 2: Seedling Stage (1–3 Weeks)
Once it sprouts, you’ve officially got a baby plant.
It’ll grow a few small round leaves first (cotyledons), then those signature cannabis fan leaves start showing up.
What’s been working for me:
-
18–20 hours of light each day.
-
Humidity around 65–70%.
-
Light watering — just enough to keep the top layer moist.
Tip: I don’t use nutrients yet. The seed has enough food for the first week or two.
🌳 Stage 3: Vegetative Stage (4–8 Weeks)
This is where the fun really starts — your plant begins to grow fast.
During this stage, I train and shape it a bit to make sure light reaches all parts of the plant.
My general setup:
-
Light: 18 on / 6 off.
-
Temp: around 75–85°F.
-
Humidity: 50–65%.
-
Feeding: This is when I start giving nutrients (I use the FoxFarm Trio).
What I’ve noticed:
The longer you veg, the bigger your yield.
But if you’re impatient like me, 5–6 weeks of veg is a good balance before flipping to flower.
🌸 Stage 4: Flowering Stage (8–10 Weeks)
This is when things get exciting — the smell kicks in, and buds start forming.
You’ll need to switch your light cycle to 12 hours on / 12 off to trigger flowering.
What’s worked for me so far:
-
Lower humidity to around 40–50%.
-
Keep temps between 70–80°F.
-
Start using bloom nutrients with less nitrogen and more phosphorus/potassium.
Heads up:
Your plants will stretch a lot in the first two weeks after flipping — mine almost doubled in height.
Keep an eye on your light distance.
✂️ Stage 5: Harvest (About 1 Week)
You’ll know it’s harvest time when most of the white hairs (pistils) on your buds have turned brown/orange, and the trichomes look cloudy or milky under a magnifier.
What I do:
-
Flush with plain water for about a week before harvest.
-
Cut branches and hang them upside down in a dark, cool space (around 60°F / 50% humidity).
Patience pays off here — don’t rush drying, or your buds will burn harsh.
🍯 Stage 6: Drying & Curing (2–4 Weeks)
Once buds feel dry on the outside, I trim them up and put them into glass jars for curing.
How I handle it:
-
Keep jars in a dark place and “burp” them once a day for 10–15 minutes.
-
After 2–3 weeks, the smell and smoothness improve a ton.
Honestly, curing made more difference to flavor and quality than I expected.
⏰ Total Indoor Grow Time Summary
| Stage | Time Range |
|---|---|
| Germination | 3–10 days |
| Seedling | 1–3 weeks |
| Vegetative | 4–8 weeks |
| Flowering | 8–10 weeks |
| Harvest + Curing | 3–4 weeks |
| Total: | Around 3–5 months (seed to smoke) |
🌼 Final Thoughts
Every grow is different, and that’s kinda the beauty of it.
I’m still figuring things out myself — learning what works, what doesn’t, and what my plants are trying to tell me.
If you’re new to growing, don’t stress over perfection.
Just pay attention, take notes, and adjust each round.
I’ll be posting full journals here on Kabloomi as I go — starting with my Candy Cake strain, which is currently in veg getting ready to flip.
